Evaporation vs. Leaks: Understanding Water Loss

Water loss in swimming pools can occur due to evaporation or leaks. The typical evaporation rate for an uncovered pool is about 1/4 inch of water per day, which can amount to over 2 inches per week depending on environmental factors like temperature, wind speed, and humidity. Pools with covers significantly reduce evaporation, often losing less than 1/16 inch of water per day. If your pool's water level drops faster than these rates, it may indicate a leak.

Our Process: From Leak Confirmation to Resolution

  • To determine whether your pool is leaking or simply losing water to evaporation, we perform a simple bucket test:

    1. Fill a bucket with pool water to match the pool's water level.

    2. Place the bucket on the pool steps and mark the water levels inside and outside the bucket.

    3. After 24 hours, compare the levels. If the pool water drops more than the bucket water, it confirms a leak.

  • Once we confirm a leak, our team conducts a thorough inspection using advanced techniques such as:

    • Dye Testing: We apply specialized dye near suspected areas like cracks or fittings to trace water movement toward leaks.

    • Pressure Testing: For plumbing leaks, we pressurize pipes and monitor for pressure drops that indicate compromised lines.

    • Electronic Detection: Using sound waves or electrical currents, we pinpoint leaks with high precision.
